Stevenson & Marshall are pleased to be supporting Will Aid again this year. We are already busy taking bookings in preparation for Will Aid 2018 which runs throughout November.
Under Will Aid, solicitors waive their fees for will writing services, inviting clients to make a voluntary donation to Will Aid instead. The suggested voluntary donation for a basic Will Aid will is £95 for a single will and £150 for a pair of “mirror” wills for couples. Funds raised support the vital work of Will Aid’s nine partner charities (ActionAid, Age UK, British Red Cross, Christian Aid, NSPCC, Save the Children, Sightsavers, SCIAF (Scotland) and Trocaire (N. Ireland)) benefitting children, the elderly and other vulnerable people in the UK and around the world.
A study carried out by Will Aid to mark the launch of this year’s campaign found that, alarmingly, more than half of parents in the UK with children under 18 have not made a will.
Peter de Vena Franks, campaign director for Will Aid said “Writing a will is a chance for a parent or parents to leave clear instructions about who they would like to care for their child in the event of their death. If you die without appointing a guardian, and there is no other parent with parental responsibility, an application would need to be made to the court to decide with whom your child will live, in the event of a dispute about this. Preparing a correctly worded will with a solicitor is the best way to ensure your wishes are carried out.”
Making a will is one of the most thoughtful and important things you can do to protect those you love. Yet it is surprising that fewer than half of people have made one. Most say they simply have not got around to it and yet it may take years to sort out someone's estate if they die without a will, leaving their nearest and dearest in great distress.
So, grasp the opportunity to make a proper, valid will with a solicitor to ensure your wishes will be carried out after death and to avoid the kind of family disputes, financial worries and legal battles that can ensue when someone dies without a proper will.
